The 2023 SIC Maui SUP Racing Team Revealed

International SUP, FOIL & Wing Foil brand SIC has revealed its SUP Race Team for 2023. While two young SUP racers, Rai Taguchi (he is currently assessing offers from various brands) and Bodie Von Allmen (recruited by team NSP), are no longer part of SIC’s Global Team after years of being nurtured by the historic Hawaiian brand, SIC has consolidated its team with the addition of two more than promising young athletes: new European Sprint Champion and 2-time World Championships silver medalist Caroline KĂĽntzel from Denmark and one of France’s top talents, 18-year-old, Ethan Bry – although he is currently on a 1-year break from any SUP race competition and should resume to international SUP racing in the 2nd part of the year. Caroline and Ethan, but also 17-year-old Campbell Carter who is promoted to the Global Team from the SIC Youth program, join a strong and experienced international composed of 2019 APP World Tour champion Seychelle who is coming back to the international racing scene as a mom, Jade Howson, Rika Okuaki, Ludovic Teulade, David Leao, Ryohei Yoshida, under the team management of Tamas “Tommy” Buday. Let’s meet the 2023 SIC team!

Caroline KĂĽntzel – DENMARK

Age: 20
Live in: Klitmoller, Denmark

Caroline grew up in Denmark Cold Hawaii, watching her dad do all kinds surf sports, But as a kid, she wasn’t feeling comfortable in the ocean herself. Instead, she grew up doing many other sports, like biking, swimming, climbing, fitness and rhythmic gymnastics. When she was 15 years old, she watched the ISA Worlds in SUP when it was hosted in Denmark.

The passion and skill of these SUP athletes inspired her to start. Soon she began SUP surfing every day after school, taking the bus with her boards. Her passion grew and the Danish cold winter became her happy place. Caroline is now an all-waterwoman and she loves to learn and explore limits within watersports.

Ethan Bry – FRANCE

Age: 18

Ethan grew up and still lives on one of Brittany and France’s most beautiful peninsulas, the Presqu’ile de Crozon. Its “cruciform” tip makes it a magnificent playground for expressing yourself on the water any and every way you want. Living so close to the sea, Ethan has become a true master of all. He’s non-stop, changing sports for whatever the weather conditions may be. Surf, SUP foil, surf foil, prone, windsurf, wing foil, and a bit of Mountain Biking allows him to burn off energy. But it’s Foil, SUP Race, and SUP Downwind where he best expresses himself.

“Being on the water makes me feel like my real self. It’s the perfect wake-up every day. It’s an addiction!”

At just 18 years old, he’s already a big success on the international scene. Ethan got into SUP at an early age, thanks to his dad, but he got serious about paddling five years ago when he began training with his coach Amaury Dormet and riding at and for the Crozon Waterman Club. Over the last two years on the Euro Tour (the top European Circuit), Ethan had some impressive results. Especially his 3rd place in Majorca and 6th in Alicante. His favorite competition is Downwind. “It’s full-on. Anything can and does happen. Especially if someone has a fall, you have to read and ride the waves and swell.”

This year promises to be intense for Ethan as he takes on the added challenge of starting medical school while pursuing a racing career. All the same, he’s expecting to be out for at least one serious session every week. We can’t wait to see him back in competitive action in the second part of 2023, but also to share in all his future downwind adventures!

It was later on, staying at his grandfather’s in Marseille, that Ludo, along with his brother Jeremy (already a total windsurf addict !) first saw and discovered SUP.
