Molokabra 2025: Ride the Wind Swells in Brazil’s Triple Downwind Race!

After an unforgettable 2024 edition, I’m excited to share with you that Molokabra, Brazil’s biggest downwind multicraft competition (SUP, SUP Foil, Outrigger Canoe, Va’a, Surfski, Prone paddleboard, Wing, Kite etc.), is returning for its seventh edition from August 22nd to 31st, 2025, in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. Having experienced it firsthand, I can honestly say that this event is one of the most incredible in the world, and I’ll be heading back next year to bring you live coverage as it unfolds.

Molokabra takes inspiration from Hawaii’s legendary downwind races, combining the Molokai spirit with the essence of Brazil. Over the past six editions, this event has grown into a true international highlight, and next year promises to be bigger than ever. We’ll see the very best paddlers from Brazil and around the globe competing in Stand Up Paddle, SUP Foil, Paddleboard, Surfski, Outrigger Canoe, and even Sailing Canoe. Organized by the Stand Up Paddle Association of Ceará, it’s set to be another epic showdown on the water.

In 2024, more than 300 athletes came together for a thrilling week of racing, and the event was officially recognized by both the Brazilian Stand Up Paddle Confederation and the Brazilian Canoe Confederation. For 2025, the organizers are pushing for even greater international recognition, with aims to expand official sanctioning across all disciplines.

Some of the biggest names in paddlesports have taken part in Molokabra, including South African legend Oscar Chalupsky, American Greg Barton, and New Zealand’s Tupuria King. Last year, we also saw an incredible French delegation led by Olivier Darrieumerlou, with world champion Mélanie Lafenetre joining the competition. Their presence brought even more global attention to the event, and I was lucky enough to capture that excitement and share it with you all.

What makes Molokabra truly special are the conditions—consistent 20-knot trade winds, perfect ocean bumps, and a coastal setting that’s a paradise for downwind paddling. Beyond the racing, Ceará offers great hospitality, amazing places to stay, and easy access for international travelers.

For those of you looking to participate, registration is already open, and the advice from Heyner Fortunato, President of ASUPCE, is to start preparing now—both physically and mentally. With four downwind races of 30 kilometers, this is not a race for beginners. If you’re new to the downwind format, there are clinics led by some of the top athletes that will help you get ready.

So, whether you’re planning to race or just want to experience the thrill of Molokabra, I’ll be there once again, bringing you all the action live from Brazil in 2025. Stay tuned for more updates, and if you’re thinking about registering, head over to Real Timing’s website for all the details.

See you in Ceará!
