These camps are not just about improving technical skills but also about fostering a sense of community and connection with nature. Whether it’s challenging the ocean’s waves or honing advanced maneuvers, Leo creates an immersive experience that leaves participants inspired and motivated to continue their SUP surfing journey.
With the 2025 camp dates now live, Leo is ready to welcome paddlers of all abilities to explore new adventures and hone their skills in some of the world’s most beautiful coastal locations.
Hi Leo, looking back on this year, how has it been for you in terms of racing and camps? Any standout moments? Have you participated in any SUP surfing events?
This year has been incredible! I’ve had the chance to race against some of the best athletes in the world, but what I really cherish is my time at the camps and participating in SUP surfing events. One standout moment in SUP racing was the GlaGla Race 2024 in January, where I placed in the top 10, but I also had fantastic experiences riding waves and connecting with fellow surfers at SUP surfing events throughout this year. The real highlight for me has been witnessing participants progress in their skills, especially in SUP surfing, from beginners catching their first waves to advanced paddlers mastering new maneuvers. It’s rewarding to see that joy and excitement on their faces.
You’ve recently updated your Nika Paddle-Surf Camps calendar. What are the key highlights of the upcoming camps, both for the remainder of this year and into 2025?
The upcoming camps are packed with opportunities for SUP surfing in some of the best coastal locations, like Morocco and the Algarve. Each camp fosters a community where paddlers can enhance their skills, focusing on wave riding and enjoying the thrill of surfing. I’m also excited to introduce new destinations in 2025 that provide fantastic conditions for both surfing and paddling.
What can participants expect to gain from attending one of your camps, whether they are beginners or more advanced paddlers?
At our camps, everyone is welcome, from beginners to seasoned paddlers. For beginners, the focus is on building confidence and learning the fundamentals of SUP surfing, while advanced paddlers can refine their techniques and learn how to navigate challenging waves. Ultimately, the goal is for everyone to leave feeling inspired and motivated to continue their surfing journey.
How do you integrate your racing and SUP surfing experience into your coaching at the camps? Do you use specific training techniques that you’ve found particularly effective?
My experience in both racing and SUP surfing informs my coaching style. We prioritize essential skills like wave riding and paddling efficiency. I share stories and techniques from my racing background to help paddlers understand the importance of focus and technique in both surfing and racing. Each participant receives personalized training tailored to their individual needs, ensuring they get the most out of their experience.
Can you walk us through what a typical day looks like at one of your camps, from morning to evening? Where do participants stay, and what can they expect in terms of activities, training, and downtime throughout the day?
A typical day at the camp is a blend of training, adventure, and relaxation. We usually start with a morning paddle or some stretching to warm up. After breakfast, we dive into technical training on the water, focusing on SUP surfing techniques. Lunch is a great opportunity to relax and share stories. In the afternoon, we often have additional paddling sessions or fun surf activities. Evenings are special, with shared dinners and the chance to enjoy sunset paddles. Participants stay in comfortable accommodations close to the water, ensuring they’re always near the action and relaxation.
Are there any new destinations or changes in the format of the camps that attendees can look forward to?
Yes! We’re excited to introduce new locations that offer excellent conditions for SUP surfing. We’re also adding more specialized sessions that focus on wave riding techniques and surf strategies. Whether you’re a first-timer or looking to challenge yourself further, the format remains flexible, allowing for personal attention and tailored experiences for every participant.
As a professional SUP racer and surfer, what advice would you give to paddlers looking to improve their performance and potentially compete at higher levels?
My biggest advice is to focus on consistency and technique. It’s crucial to develop a strong foundation in SUP surfing and learn to read the waves effectively. Mental strength plays a significant role too, so maintaining a positive mindset and believing in your abilities is essential. Joining a camp is a great way to receive personalized feedback and support, which can help accelerate your improvement in both surfing and racing.
