Use a mat or a pet-friendly deck pads for comfort, grip and protection

Add a soft, durable deck pad or mat made from materials like EVA foam (which is lightweight, durable, and water-resistant) or soft textured rubber. These provide a comfortable surface for your dog and additional grip while protecting the board from scratches. It’s a small investment that makes a big difference in comfort and durability for countless adventures to come.

MOAI, the family-owned Dutch watersport brand, has added a protective MOAI SUP deck pad to their accessories line. Measuring 67 cm (26 inches) by 117 cm (46 inches), the mat is designed to fit most all-round and touring paddleboard models, making it a versatile addition for paddleboarding enthusiasts.

Benefits of a deck pad or mat:

Enhanced comfort for your pet:
Hard and slippery when wet paddleboard decks can be uncomfortable for your dog to sit, lie, or stand on, especially during longer sessions. A pet-friendly deck pad provides a soft, shock-absorbing surface that reduces strain on their joints and paw pads. This is especially important for older dogs or breeds prone to joint issues.

Improved grip and stability:
Dogs rely on grip to stay stable, especially when the board shifts on the water. Textured mats help prevent slipping, even when the surface gets wet. The added traction also gives your pet more confidence to move around the board without fear of sliding off.

Protection for your paddleboard: Deck pads act as a protective barrier, preventing scratches and marks caused by your pet’s nails or rough paw pads. They help maintain the board’s surface, ensuring it lasts longer.

Dry runs and teaching your dog to stay in one spot

Dry runs are an important part of the process, especially for refining balance on the board later, as your companion moves around while you’re paddling. Training your dog to remain in a specific area of the paddleboard will reduce movement and prevent scratching. How to achieve that?

Introduce the board on land: Start by placing the paddleboard on a flat surface like grass, carpet, or a non-slip mat. Let your dog explore it at their own pace, sniffing and stepping onto the board to build confidence.

Train to stay in a designated area: Use a leash or visual cues (such as a marked area or mat) to guide your dog to a specific spot on the board, preferably near the centre for better balance and control
Encourage them to sit or lie down in this area to reduce unnecessary movement during paddling.
Reward with treats, praise, or their favourite toy each time they stay in place, reinforcing the desired behaviour.

Simulate SUP movements: Gently rock the board or tilt it slightly to mimic the motion of water. This helps your dog acclimate to the sensation of shifting balance. Gradually increase the intensity of the movements as your dog becomes more comfortable.

Build duration and comfort: Start with short sessions and gradually increase the time your dog spends on the board. Pair the experience with positive associations, like treats or playtime afterward, to keep the training fun and stress-free.

Reward good behaviour: Consistently reward your dog for remaining calm and in their designated spot, even when you mimic paddling or move around the board.

Keep Nails Trimmed and Paws Clean

Regularly trimming your pet’s nails and cleaning their paws is essential for protecting your paddleboard and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for both of you. Overgrown nails can easily scratch the surface of your board, causing damage over time that could affect its performance and durability. Similarly, dirt and sand on your pet’s paws can act like sandpaper, wearing down the board’s surface.

Dog Booties

Dog booties not only protect the board but also keep your dog’s paws safe and provide extra grip. Ensure your dog is comfortable wearing them before heading out. There’s a wide range of high-quality, durable booties available on the market from waterproof, non-slip, heat protection to recovery ones, ensuring your furry friend comfort and protection during outdoor, on and off water adventures.

Overall SUP board care

Proper care and maintenance of your stand-up paddleboard are key to keeping it in excellent condition and ensuring it lasts for many seasons, whether you’re paddling solo or with your furry companion. Regularly rinsing the board after each use, drying it thoroughly, and protecting its surface by avoiding prolonged sun exposure, dragging, or mishandling during transport will help extend its lifespan. With these simple practices, your board will continue to power countless SUP adventures for years to come.
