Duhaime and Delgado Crowned Champions of the 1st Edition of the Copa América de SUP

Last week Argentina and Peru were crowned champions of the Copa América de SUP in Colombia. The inaugural version of the new Stand Up Paddle Tour saw Infinity rider from Argentina Juliette Duhaime as the women’s champion and Peru’s Itzel Delgado as the men’s champion.

The tour, which visited the departments of Córdoba, Bolívar, and Sucre, attracted top athletes from across the Americas.

The event offered a prize pool of $20,000 USD.

The Colombian Surf Federation, the Ministry of Sports, Electrolit, among other entities, organized the first edition of the Copa América de SUP in various cities across the country.

The various scheduled activities took place from August 2 to 12, 2024, in the departments of Córdoba, Sucre, and Bolívar, with participants from over 8 countries. This first edition awarded champions in the Long Distance, Sprint, and Tech Race categories.

The first stop was in Córdoba, at San Bernardo del Viento, where the competition took place on Pompeya Beach, set against a stunning natural backdrop.

The event then moved to the tourist town of Coveñas in Sucre, where the opening ceremony was held, and concluded in the globally renowned city of Cartagena de Indias with a nighttime demonstration of the Sprint category for both women and men at the Espíritu del Manglar Park Lagoon.

Among the participating countries were Panama, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Argentina. Notable international invitees included world runner-up Itzel Delgado, current champion of the Molokai to Oahu race, Mariecarmen Rivera, the 2024 Euro Tour Champion, and Flying Fish’s top rider Eri Tenorio from Brazil.

The final leg of the Tour was attended by the mayor of Cartagena de Indias, Dumek Turbay, and concluded with a grand finale.

In total, the Copa America de SUP 2024 awarded a prize pool of $20,000 USD and boosted tourism and local economies in San Bernardo del Viento (Córdoba), Coveñas (Sucre), and Cartagena de Indias (Bolívar).

The prizes were distributed as follows:

Women’s Tech Race: Juliette Duhaime ($2,000 USD), Mari Carmen Rivera ($1,000 USD), and Lucia Clembosky ($800 USD)
Men’s Tech Race: Itzel Delgado ($2,000 USD), Santino Balsadella ($1,000 USD), and Eri Tenorio ($800 USD)
Women’s Sprint: Juliette Duhaime ($2,000 USD), Mariecarmen Rivera ($1,000 USD), and Lucia Clembosky ($800 USD)
Men’s Sprint: Itzel Delgado ($2,000 USD), Eri Tenorio ($1,000 USD), and Santino Balsadella ($800 USD)
Finally, the overall women’s champion of the Copa America de SUP 2024 was Juliette Duhaime, followed by Mariecarmen Rivera and Lucia Clembosky. The men’s overall champion was Itzel Delgado, followed by Eri Tenorio and Santino Balsadella.

Andrés Porras, president of the Colombian Surf Federation, expressed his gratitude for the participation in the Cup and announced that 2025 will feature a larger event with four stages and an increased prize pool.

The Stand Up Paddle Tour – Copa America de SUP 2024 was supported and sponsored by the Ministry of Sports, the Government of Córdoba, the Government of Sucre, the Cartagena de Indias City Hall, and Electrolit, under the leadership of the South American Surf Confederation, the Colombian Surf Federation, and the Surf Leagues of Córdoba, Sucre, and Bolívar.
