When the SUP and all-waterman legend Zane Kekoa Schweitzer says, “It made me excited to SUP surf again… Yeah, I kinda don’t want to ride any other board,” the SUP world is listening and it’s about to be hit with a seismic delivery from Starboard.
We’ve all seen the slick teaser drops building the hype – those phantom-like reveals sparking a wave of questions: Is it black? Is it silver? What is this board? The curiosity has been dialled up. And now, the wait is almost over.
The latest addition to Starboard’s quiver – the TwinFin board – has already been put through its paces by some of the biggest names in SUP. Between April and September, prototypes were trialed in both challenging reef breaks and smaller shore waves.
What we know so far? The TwinFin has been developed with one clear focus: speed. Speed is what makes surfing easier – it carries you through turns, prevents hang-ups, and keeps your flow alive from deep bottom turns to high-line arcs. The TwinFin allows to connect maneuvers seamlessly, letting riders carve powerful lines and draw out sweeping turns without losing momentum.
The TwinFin also delivers on its promise of “loose, skate-like turns”. With a “lighter drive”, the tail releases faster – giving intermediate riders easier rotation, and unlocking radical tail slides for those ready to push hard.
And without a centre fin, riders will have more freedom to move up and down the face with agility, unlocking a whole new level of flow and responsiveness.
Ollie O’Reilly, Brand Manager at Starboard, said: “I’ve been blown away by the performance of this board. I had about an hour and a half session in waves from shoulder-high to well above the head – and the speed you get on this board is unreal. It gives you so much confidence to make your sections.”
Trevor Tunnington, Product Design Manager at Starboard, said: “With the TwinFin, it’s a slightly different feeling – it gives you that freedom to move wherever you want on the wave. It’s super quick, super responsive, and you never really get caught up when you’re doing a turn, whether it’s a bottom turn or a top turn. With the nubster in the middle, it turns into a really nice thruster setup.”
Benoit Carpentier, Starboard Dream Team Rider, said: “TwinFin is the fastest and loosest board, and I’d use it in some bowly conditions where it’s not too big and I really want to go out hard and innovate a little bit – with some rotations and stuff like that. Or in some point break conditions, where I just want to go on rail and do some big curves on the wave. It’s a really complete board, both innovative with a strong rail game, which is great.”
Riders can now register their interest and join the list for product updates – with the official launch in July and first deliveries landing this August. Those who register their interest via the website form will receive an exclusive TwinFin White Paper, featuring full product details.
Starboard will also be hosting a Team Demo Day on 24 April in Bali, so stay tuned on social media and keep your eyes peeled for updates.
