European SUP League: Isla Cristina Delivers High-Level Racing, Drama and Breakthroughs

The European SUP League brought three days of racing, beachside action and international Stand Up Paddle to Playa Central in Isla Cristina from 4 to 6 September, with nearly 150 athletes taking part in the fifth stop of the 2026 season. With four world champions among the field, the Isla Cristina SUP Race delivered a strong mix of elite competition, amateur racing and community activities, while giving athletes and spectators the opportunity to experience the coastline, culture and gastronomy of the Costa de la Luz. A fast start with the 200-metre Sprints

The competitive programme got underway on Saturday with the 200-metre Sprint races, with the course positioned close to shore and spectators able to follow the action from just metres away.

The men’s final delivered one of the tightest finishes of the weekend. Fernando Pérez Serra, from Los Caños de Meca in Cádiz province, had plenty of local support behind him and made the most of it, taking the win in a closely fought battle with Aarón Sánchez Quetglas and Sergio Cantoral Quirant.

The three riders were locked together as they approached the finish, before a decisive moment changed the outcome. Sergio Cantoral tripped, allowing both Fernando and Aarón to move past him. Fernando crossed the line first, with Aarón initially finishing second and Sergio recovering to take third.

However, the final classification was subsequently changed after Aarón Sánchez Quetglas was penalised and moved down to fourth place for an unlawful turn around a buoy. The decision led to a lengthy discussion on the beach after the race between Sánchez and the judging panel, with the athlete making clear that he did not agree with the ruling.

As a result, Sergio Cantoral Quirant was elevated to second and Iván Puente Rodríguez to third in the official classification.

For Pérez Serra, the victory had an added significance. Los Caños de Meca is around two hours from Isla Cristina, but the Cádiz local had strong support from the crowd throughout the event, giving his Sprint win a distinctly home-crowd feel.

The result also provided an early shake-up in the European SUP League standings. Donato Freens, who arrived in Isla Cristina as the men’s overall leader, missed out on both the A and B Finals after finishing third in his semi-final — a rare early exit for the championship leader and one that could prove significant heading into the final round.

In the women’s final, the four-athlete field brought together two world champions, Duna Gordillo Rodríguez and Alba Alonso Frey, alongside two riders who have been making their mark on the 2026 European SUP League season: 17-year-old U18 phenomenon Nuria Chiquero García of Parres Watersports Club in Alicante, and Bianca Toncelli, who had already claimed the Sprint victory at the Santa Pola stop of the league.

Chiquero produced a flying start and led the field all the way to the buoy. But the race changed dramatically around the turn. Alba Alonso Frey went slightly wide, allowing Duna to take a tighter line behind her and emerge from the buoy turn in front.

With around 40 metres remaining, Gordillo had moved into first and she held the position all the way to the finish to claim the women’s Sprint victory. Alba Alonso Frey crossed second, with Nuria Chiquero taking third after an impressive performance against two world champions and a proven Sprint specialist in Toncelli.

The victory was particularly significant for Duna, who was returning to the European SUP League after missing the first two rounds of the season while recovering from a serious ankle injury suffered earlier in the year. Her comeback was completed in style with a hard-fought Sprint win on the shores of Isla Cristina.

Aarón Sánchez finds redemption and Alba Alonso Frey extends her European SUP League dominance in the Technical Race

Sunday brought the Technical Race. The 600-metre course featured beach starts and finishes, tight buoy turns and plenty of opportunities for overtaking, with all A and B Finals completed over two laps.

For Aarón Sánchez Quetglas, it was a day of redemption — or revenge, depending on how you looked at it — after the controversy of Saturday’s Sprint final.

The reigning Technical Race world champion played the long game in the men’s final. Fernando Pérez Serra led from the start and stayed in front throughout almost the entire race, managing the pressure and holding the advantage all the way to the final buoy. But Sánchez had waited for his moment.

With just 50 metres to go, Aarón launched his attack, closing the gap on Pérez Serra and setting up a dramatic head-to-head sprint for the finish. The two riders battled side by side, with Sánchez Quetglas producing the decisive acceleration to take the victory by the narrowest of margins.

Fernando had to settle for second, while Iván “Ivi” Puente Rodríguez once again delivered an impressive result to claim third and his second podium of the weekend. The rider from Club Nacosta in Galicia continues to establish himself as one of the circuit’s emerging contenders, consistently challenging the more established names.

Donato Freens, meanwhile, finished fourth. Having arrived in Isla Cristina leading the European SUP League standings, the Dutchman will likely look back on the weekend knowing that valuable championship points slipped away. And there was further drama behind him as Sergio Cantoral Quirant, who came into the event second overall, finished seventh after a fall.

With Freens and Cantoral both losing ground in Isla Cristina, the championship picture has tightened considerably. The final stop in Sesimbra, Portugal, from 11 to 13 September, is now set to be decisive, with the European SUP League men’s title very much still up for grabs.

The women’s Technical Race began with a major upset. Duna Gordillo Rodríguez, the NSP racer from Mallorca and three-time world champion who had won the Sprint the day before, suffered a broken paddle right at the start of the final.

With no option but to turn back and collect a replacement, Duna’s chances of fighting for the win were effectively over before the race had properly begun — a brutal twist after her impressive Sprint victory on Saturday.

The incident opened the door for Alba Alonso Frey, and the Starboard rider made the most of it. Already the most prolific winner on the European SUP League this season, including a double victory at the previous stop in Poland, Alba suddenly found herself with a clear path to another victory.

Nuria Chiquero García was the one rider able to put pressure on her early. The 17-year-old U18 standout challenged Alba through the first lap, but by the second, Frey had established herself firmly at the front and began to extend her advantage.

The 2024 Sprint world champion went on to claim another European SUP League victory, adding to her second-place finish in Saturday’s Sprint and further consolidating her dominance at the top of the circuit.

For Chiquero, second place was another major step forward. At just 17, the Parres Watersports Club rider is getting closer than ever to her first open women’s victory and is rapidly establishing herself as one of the sport’s next generation of great racers.

There was also a standout performance behind the two leaders from 19-year-old Laura Paricio Godián of República SUP Club in Alicante. After an impressive race, Paricio secured third place and her first European SUP League podium, underlining the depth of emerging Spanish talent on the circuit.

Isla Cristina puts itself on the European SUP map

Beyond the results, the Isla Cristina stop demonstrated the potential of the Costa de la Luz as a destination for major international paddle sports events.

Playa Central provided a natural arena for the competition, while the town’s maritime heritage, extensive beaches and proximity to the Marismas de Isla Cristina gave athletes and visitors plenty to experience away from the race course.

The event also brought international attention to Isla Cristina and Huelva, helping showcase the area as a destination where sport, nature, tourism and local culture can come together.

With competition taking place in September, the event also offered an opportunity to extend the region’s tourism activity beyond the traditional peak summer period, bringing athletes, teams, supporters and event personnel into local accommodation, restaurants and businesses.

One stop to go: the European SUP League heads to Sesimbra

The Isla Cristina SUP Race was the 5th and penultimate stop of the 2026 European SUP League season. The circuit now heads across the border to Sesimbra, Portugal, from 11 to 13 September, where the European SUP League champions will be decided.

After Isla Cristina, Donato Freens remains at the top of the men’s overall standings, followed closely by Sergio Cantoral and Aarón Sánchez.

In the women’s ranking, Alba Alonso Frey leads the championship, with Nuria Chiquero in second and Bianca Toncelli in third.

That leaves everything to play for in Sesimbra.

For Isla Cristina, meanwhile, the first appearance on the European SUP League calendar has already made an impression. Three days of racing brought elite athletes, emerging talent and spectators together on the Costa de la Luz — and established Playa Central as a compelling setting for international SUP competition.
