Proudly representing the Argentinian Club Náutico Mar del Plata and flying theStarboardflag, Fabrizio Rondinara , 19, delivered a standout performance at this year’s O2Y – Okinawa to Yoron Race, brought by Kanaka Okinawa, one of the most iconic endurance events on the SUP calendar. The 2025 edition once again revived the ancient spirit of the Ryukyu watermen, with paddlers tackling the intense 30km crossing between Okinawa and Yoron Island.
Rondinara showcased strategy and power, securing a top 5 overall finish in a highly competitive international field. The lineup featured some of the sport’s top names, including native 8x World Champion Shuri Araki, who successfully defended his title, 8x British SUP Champion Blue Ewer and Greek powerhouses – Nikolaos Malekakis (2024 ICF Vice World Sprint Champion) and Tasos Tsouris (Long Distance Champion).

Rondinara’s result and consistent performances on the world stage highlight a new level of form and further solidify his reputation as one of South America’s rising forces in long-distance SUP racing.
As the dust settles in Okinawa, Rondinara is already on the move, now headed to South Korea for the APP Seoul SUP Open held on 5th – 6th July on the Han River. With O2Y momentum behind him and global eyes on the APP World Tour stage, expect Fabrizio to bring that same relentless energy to the urban waterways of Seoul.
Fabricio, you’ve been representing Mar del Plata and Argentina on the international SUP stage. Can you tell us how your journey into stand-up paddleboarding began and what drew you to the competitive scene?
I discovered this beautiful sport at the age of 9 during a vacation in Brazil with my family. From the moment I saw a board in the water and people paddling, I was immediately drawn to it. I spent the entire vacation week paddling, and when I returned to my city, my parents supported me in finding a stand-up paddle school where I could learn. That’s where I really felt a deep connection with the sport and the sea.
I have always had that connection with water; it brings me a sense of peace and happiness. It’s curious because my family has no ties to the sea; my father was a race car driver, and my sisters are more inclined towards the arts. But for me, water has been a place of serenity.
Since I saw the first technical race competitions, I knew I wanted to compete. I started on the competitive scene by participating in all-around in an Argentine National competition, where, to my surprise, I won my first race. That victory ignited my desire to keep competing. Even today, I maintain the same excitement I felt as an 11-year-old. That passion is what keeps me motivated and on this path.

You’re part of the Starboard family – how did that partnership come about, and what Starboard gear do you currently use for training and racing? What makes it a good fit for your paddling style and the variety of conditions you face?
From the moment I was offered to become a Starboard Ambassador in Argentina, it was an incredible experience. I have deeply admired and respected this brand since I started in the sport. Seeing elite athletes compete with their boards and now being able to represent Argentina with them is a true honour.
Currently, I use the 2024 Starboard All Star 14×21.5 board. This board is undoubtedly fast and adapts to any condition, which is essential for me. In addition, I use a full carbon Lima paddle, which maximizes my stroke and allows me to move comfortably on the water. This set up not only fits my paddling style but also provides me confidence and performance in competitions and training, regardless of sea conditions.

Let’s talk about last weekend — you just took part in the Okinawa 2 Yoron (O2Y) race, a two-stage 30km downwind organized by Shuri Araki and his father Taku. How did you first hear about this event and what made you decide to take on the challenge?
I have always considered participating in this event, as it is a great challenge. Last year, Takuji and Shuri invited me to compete, but I couldn’t attend due to the distance and complicated dates from Argentina. However, this year, while I was in Barcelona, my friend MarieCarmen Rivera and my Coach Oscar also convinced me to go. I spoke with Taku, and that’s how this amazing opportunity presented itself.
The preparation process was short but intensive, and my Coach helped me to be as ready as possible for this challenge. I
decided to take on the challenge because it was something new for me, and I was eager to experience this race. I definitely want to do it many more times! The experience was truly enriching, and I loved every moment.
What were your first impressions of the islands and the paddling community in Okinawa? How did it feel to discover Shuri’s home life and lifestyle and be part of such a unique international event in Japan?
Since I set foot in Okinawa, I was in awe. This place is truly a paradise. The people are incredibly kind, and while paddling in their waters, I was able to see turtles and giant manta rays, an experience that is hard to describe.
Living with the team that participated in the race, as well as with Shuri and his family, was something beautiful. They made me feel at home, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Being part of this unique international event in Japan allowed me to experience Shuri’s life and lifestyle in a very special way. It was an unforgettable experience that I will always carry in my heart.

Can you walk us through each stage of the O2Y race? How did the conditions play out across the two days, and how did you manage your effort and strategy over the 2 x 15km downwind race of open ocean?
The race was divided into two stages of 15 kilometers each. In the first part, we started from the sea to the port of OKU, where they were waiting for us to hydrate. The atmosphere was incredible, as we competed alongside local fishermen from the island and its surroundings.
The first stage took place in the morning. The sea conditions were challenging, and the heat was intense, making it crucial to stay hydrated. During the race, I had to maintain an appropriate pace and connect well with each wave to advance efficiently. Managing my effort was essential – I took strategic breaks to drink water and ensure I didn’t dehydrate.
After restocking at the port, we returned to the water to complete the last 15 kilometers. As we progressed, the strategy remained the same: observe the waves and adapt my paddling to make the most of the current. Although it was a challenge, the experience taught me a lot about endurance and teamwork, helping me enjoy every moment of this thrilling adventure.

How satisfied were you with your performance and results? What memories will you keep from your O2Y and Okinawa island experience?
I am extremely satisfied with my performance in the O2Y. I gave my best in every stage, and that encourages me to prepare even more for next year and face this challenge again. Finishing in 5th place among the best riders and stepping onto the podium was a great joy for me.
From this experience, I will carry with me a lot of memories filled with emotions. Every moment in the sea, every laugh shared with the other participants, and the warmth of the local community in Okinawa were unforgettable moments. Without a doubt, this journey changed many things in me. The most important thing is that I was very happy, and that happiness is something I will cherish forever.
