Indian Grom Aneesh Kumar Paddles a Record-Breaking 350KM Against Plastic Pollution

Aneesh Kumar, a passionate 12-year-old environmental advocate from Chennai, has made headlines in India by becoming the first boy to paddle across three Indian states—Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Pondichéry —on a stand-up paddleboard back in May, and receiving a World Book of Records certificate in August. His inspiring journey covering 350 kilometers from Pondicherry to Nellore in 4 days was undertaken to raise awareness about the pressing issue of plastic pollution. As the son of Sathish Kumar, one of India’s most active stand up paddle racer and the founder of the SUP Marinaa club in Chennai, Aneesh is already a well-known figure within the Indian SUP community; he is the 2023 National and State SUP Champion and proudly represented India at the Sub-Junior SUP World Championship in Thailand, where he achieved an impressive 8th place finish as part of the Indian Starboard team.

An Ambitious Journey Across Coastal India

The expedition began in the scenic town of Pondicherry and stretched over four days, with Aneesh paddling tirelessly alongside eight team members who supported him throughout. Despite his young age, he demonstrated remarkable resilience and skill, especially when the second day’s unpredictable weather brought strong winds, testing their endurance and navigation. However, the physical challenges were only part of the mission; Aneesh and his team aimed to spotlight the critical issue of plastic pollution threatening India’s marine ecosystems.

Raising Awareness Through Action

During the journey, Aneesh and his team witnessed firsthand the plastic waste polluting the coastline, reinforcing the urgency of their message. Aneesh’s dedication to environmental advocacy shines through, as he undertook this physically demanding expedition to drive home the importance of reducing plastic waste. His commitment is evident in his determination to complete this journey and share his message, reminding others that even small actions can make a significant difference.

A Warm Welcome and Widespread Inspiration

As they reached their destination in Nellore, Aneesh and his team were greeted warmly by the Adani Foundation, which recognized their efforts and mission with a celebratory refreshment. Aneesh’s journey has garnered widespread attention, inspiring people of all ages to consider their impact on the environment. His accomplishment is a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to creating change, and his journey serves as a beacon of hope in the face of environmental challenges.

Looking Forward: Aiming for Greater Goals

Aneesh’s success in this journey is just the beginning of his environmental activism. His next goal is to break his father’s record by paddling from India to Sri Lanka—a feat that will further solidify his dedication to both the sport and the environment. As this young champion continues to push boundaries, his journey underscores the potential of youth in advocating for a sustainable future.
