Bohinj SUP Challenge 2024: Wildwater Champ Peter Žnidaršič on the Gem of Slovenian SUP Racing

Stand-up paddleboarders often identify SUP spots by landmarks, and one such iconic location is the bronze statue of the Goldhorn (Zlatorog) deer, a symbol of Lake Bohinj located within the Bohinj Valley of the Julian Alps, in the northwestern Upper Carniola region, and part of Triglav National Park, Slovenia. This spot is also the home of Slovenia’s premier event, the Bohinj SUP Challenge, held every year since 2015.

As the 8th edition is fast approaching,  TotalSUP caught up with Peter Žnidaršič, wildwater canoe European and World Champion turned SUP racer and one of the head coaches at SUPKlub Ljubljana, Slovenia’s largest stand-up paddle club and Organiser of the 2024 Bohinj SUP Challenge held on 17 August, the highlight of the Slovenian SUP racing season, drawing international athletes.

Can you tell us about your background and your top achievements as a professional wildwater canoe and kayak athlete?

I started paddling at a local kayak club in 2003 and later qualified for the Slovenian Wildwater canoeing National Team in 2009. Throughout my career in canoe double with Luka Zganjar, I have achieved more than 15 medals in the World and European championships, including winning the World Cup two times and becoming world champion in 2014 and vice world champion in 2016.

What motivated you to transition from wildwater canoeing and kayaking to Stand Up Paddling and how has your experience been in SUP racing so far?

My transition from wildwater canoeing to SUP was motivated by a desire to explore new challenges and broaden my skills on the water, especially on the sea and the waves, as well as explore the water from a different view. SUP racing has provided me with a fresh perspective of water sports and has been an exciting journey, especially with the quick development of this sport and its equipment. The experience has been rewarding, allowing me to apply my background in canoeing to a new sport while connecting with a vibrant community of paddlers.

As the head coach of SUPKlub in Ljubljana, can you share your history and mission with the club, and present SUP Klub to us?

At SUPKlub Ljubljana, we strive to develop a great community in this sport, from teaching the kids how to paddle to introducing this beautiful sport to new people every day. Our history is rooted in fostering a supportive environment for paddlers of all levels, from beginners to competitive athletes. SUP Klub aims to welcome everyone to stand up paddling, encourages people to be active every day, and also explore nature and new destinations while promoting nature protection, active lifestyle and the community.

The Bohinj SUP Challenge is one of the highlights of the SUP Klub’s season. What makes this event so special, and what can participants and spectators expect this year?

The Bohinj SUP Challenge stands out as a highlight of our season due to its stunning location and the vibrant atmosphere it creates. Participants from all over Europe can expect to compete against their peers and engage with fellow paddlers and spectators alike. The event in such a stunning Alpine location also provides a great opportunity to promote stand-up paddling as a beautiful outdoor sport and recreation option. This year, we aim to enhance the competition with exciting activities and a strong sense of community among all attendees, as the SUP competition takes part in the whole day event together with the kayak marathon organized by Kayak Club Bohinj.

Can you describe Lake Bohinj as a location for SUP racing? What makes it an ideal spot for this event?

Lake Bohinj is an ideal location for SUP racing because of its breathtaking natural beauty, clear waters, and calm conditions, which provide a perfect setting for both competitive and recreational paddling. The lake’s scenic surroundings and accessibility make it a favorite among paddlers, offering a unique experience that combines sport with nature.

What are some of the biggest challenges and rewards of organizing the Bohinj SUP Challenge, and how has the event grown since its inception?

One of the biggest challenges is coordinating logistics at this beautiful venue in the Triglav National Park (a Slovenian Nature Park with a lot of nature’s protective regulations) and ensuring every competitor and visitor can enjoy their stay in Slovenia. However, the rewards are immense, including witnessing the growth of the sport and the event. The joy it brings to participants and spectators each year is really stunning. Since the first Bohinj SUP challenge, the event has expanded in popularity among paddlers, attracting more people from different countries and also fostering a sense of community within the sport.

For those travelling to Slovenia for the Bohinj SUP Challenge, what other activities or destinations would you recommend they explore while they’re here?

I recommend exploring the beautiful Triglav National Park, which offers stunning hiking trails and breathtaking views. Additionally, the charming town of Bled, with its iconic lake and castle, is a must-visit. And don’t forget to taste the traditional cuisine, especially Blejska kremšnita (Bled cream cake)!
