A Federação Portuguesa de Surf (FPS) anunciou o calendário de provas do Circuito Nacional de SUP Race, que será constituído por quatro provas de Race Técnico e quatro provas de Maratona.

Ao contrário do que tinha sido anunciado anteriormente, o circuito contará com as classes 12’6 e 14’ e masculino e feminino. Este ano o Sprint não contará para o circuito nacional, mas todos os organizadores vão ser encorajados a criar uma prova de Sprint Open, para desenvolver esta vertente.
Ao mesmo tempo, a FPS anunciou também Franz Orsi como novo selecionador nacional de SUP. A residir há vários anos em Portugal, o italiano tem já uma longa experiência no windsurf e no Stand Up Paddle como competidor, tendo competido em diversas provas de cariz internacional. São também famosas as suas reportagens de SUP em alguns dos locais mais exóticos do mundo.
“Franz tem o perfil que procurávamos para construir uma Equipa Nacional para competir no 1º EUROSUP, promovido pela Federação Europeia de Surf, que se realizará em meados de junho, em França”, declarou João Aranha, presidente da FPS. “Esta será a primeira participação de uma seleção de Portugal nesta modalidade. Para além do seu papel com a Equipa Nacional, Franz terá também um contributo importante nas opções estratégicas a relativas aos formatos competitivos a implementar na modalidade em Portugal”.
Para além do Circuito Nacional de SUP Race estão também previstas mais algumas provas, como a primeira prova de SUP de Águas Bravas em Portugal (ainda sem data anunciada), um SUP Challenge em Foz Côa (em setembro, ainda sem data final) e o já tradicional Nelo Summer Challenge, um grande evento de downwind, que junta surfski, SUP e OC, de Viana do Castelo a Ofir (de 8 a 10 de julho).
Em 2015, os campeões nacionais de SUP Race foram Filipe Meira (Maratona 12’6 Masculino), Ricardo Rodrigues (Race Técnico 12’6 Masculino), Rubem Afonso (Sprint 12’6 Masculino), Catarina Barroca (Maratona e Race Técnico 12’6 Feminino) e Ângela Fernandes (Sprint 12’6 Feminino).
