They are from South Africa, have been in the surf shaping business for years and have all it takes to build a strong SUP brand. They are also a very friendly bunch and the first people we got to meet in Dana Point as part of the TotalSUP SoCal Tour earlier this month thanks to their first SUP Race ambassador, local Californian rider John Gabriel. Interview with Dana Point’s local Surf and SUP company BruSurf‘s founders: George Mayou and Sean Noone.
Tell our readers about BruSurf. How and when were you established? What are your roots in Surfing and Stand Up?
BruSurf was established in 2010 and we have been in the surf distribution business 20 years prior to starting BruSurf. Our roots run deep in the shaping community as we have a surfboard foam distribution company and deal with many companies such as Lost / Timmy Patterson / Infinity. Most of these customers have retail outlets and we have supplied them hard goods and accessories.
Give us a brief history of owner’s George Mayou and Sean Noone’s background in surfing/water sports.
Both George Mayou and Sean Noone represented South African Surfing at National and International level. George was the South African Springbok team captain and Sean was multiple times National Champion in his age group, They are both avid surfers, with Sean still active in competition, winning the NSSA Explorer division in his age group in 2013 & 2014.

Why California? Why Dana Point in specific?
We are located in Dana Point, this being the epicenter of SUP and Surfboard manufacturing. It is an amazing place to surf, test and design new shapes and boards. We also live local.
What type of gear/boards do you specialize in? Where are some of your distributor shops located?
We specialize in entry level boards that are great for beginners, touring boards and performance Surf SUP’s. Our Josh Sleigh Pro Series were designed by local shaper and aerial surf pioneer Josh Sleigh.
We sell most of our boards as complete packages and that has been very successful in retail. We have nation wide distribution from Maine to Miami and all over the West Coast.
You have just recently started to step into the racing scene with the production of your first race specific boards this past summer. What has this transition been like and what are your plans for the future?
Our first production of raceboards went very well. We are currently refining our designs and constructions, and should be ready with our next models in early 2017. Racing is a new area for us and we see great potential for growth, with our team rider John Gabriel representing us very well. Watch out for John in 2017.
Is there any additional information that you would like to share with our readers?
