Daniel Hasulyo said:
“42km in a country I’ve never visited – on one of the wildest islands in the world. An incredible course, a highly professional organisation, and the opportunity to be part of such a historic event in Malaysia make this one special.
Ultra-distance racing challenges both body and mind – a true test of endurance and high-performance skill. And the scenery? The cherry on top. Pristine waters, proper marathon island hopping – exactly how it should be.
The event falls just before the Longboard SUP Revolution in Bali, so it’s shaping up to be a solid back-to-back two weeks of action.
Training is in full swing. The weather and ocean at home in Khao Lak are incredibly inviting right now, making the long sessions feel like joy rides.
I’ve been racing marathon events across Asia and around the world for more than a decade – and I’m truly looking forward to exploring and competing in the waters of Kota Kinabalu.”

Event Director Benjamin Golimbi explained why now was the right time for Sabah to host Malaysia’s first long-distance SUP marathon, blending competition, adventure and culture:
Why was this the right moment for Sabah to host Malaysia’s first long-distance SUP marathon?
This is the right time because the world is moving back to outdoor, endurance and nature-based sports. Sabah has the waters, the weather, and the experience to host it. By doing it now, Sabah positions itself as a pioneer, not a follower, in paddle sports tourism.
What makes Kota Kinabalu uniquely suited for an international SUP event?
In Kota Kinabalu, you paddle with tropical islands on one side and Mount Kinabalu on the other. The start line is minutes from the airport, hotels, and marine parks. Very few cities in the world offer that kind of natural and logistical advantage.
How does the Borneo International SUP Marathon align with Visit Malaysia Year 2026?
This event reflects exactly what Visit Malaysia Year 2026 stands for, nature, sustainability, culture, and active travel. Athletes don’t just race; they experience Malaysia from the sea, which is a powerful way to tell our tourism story to the world.
What does hosting this inaugural event mean for Sabah’s image as a sports tourism destination?
It shows that Sabah is ready to host world-class endurance events, not only on land but at sea. This marathon elevates Sabah as a complete sports tourism destination in Southeast Asia.
Do you see paddle tourism becoming a long-term offering beyond the marathon itself?
Definitely. The marathon is just the starting point. Sabah has huge potential for guided paddle routes, island-to-island journeys, mangrove paddling, and wellness experiences. Paddle tourism can become a year-round product.
What impact do you expect the marathon to have on local businesses and communities?
The impact goes straight to the ground, hotels, homestays, boat operators, food vendors, and local guides all benefit. More importantly, coastal communities are partners in the event, not just spectators.
How are local operators, guides, and hospitality providers involved?
Local operators are deeply involved, from safety boats and logistics to accommodation and tours. This is about building local capacity so the benefits and skills stay in Sabah long after the event.
Is there a legacy plan to grow participation among local paddlers and youth?
Yes, legacy is key. We’re planning youth clinics, school programs, and local race categories. Our goal is that future editions will see more Sabahan paddlers competing, and winning, on home waters.
What can international athletes expect from paddling in Sabah’s waters?
They can expect warm tropical seas, scenic island routes, and fair but challenging conditions. You’re not just racing, you’re paddling through one of the most beautiful seascapes in the region.
How are you balancing competition with adventure and cultural experience?
This is a serious race, but it’s also a meaningful journey. We want athletes to compete hard on the water, then slow down on land, experience Sabahan culture, food, and people. That’s what makes this marathon special.
Thank you for your time Benjamin and we can’t wait to follow the race!
