An Adventure of Endurance and Friendship: Thomas Schillig‘s Return to SUP 11 Islands in Thailand

In one month, the SUP 11 Islands Tour in Thailand welcomes back long-distance paddler Thomas Schillig for a five-day journey through stunning landscapes and open seas. Running from December 3rd to 8th, the event challenges paddlers with an average of 25 kilometers per day. Thomas, who began paddling in 2011, is known for his work with the Swiss brand Airboard, where he has contributed to numerous innovations in inflatable SUPs. Since 2019, he’s embraced some of the world’s toughest SUP challenges, including the Yukon River Quest and the Amazon, paddling close to 3000 kilometers each year. For Schilling, this event is about more than distance – it’s a chance to celebrate SUP culture, forge connections, and soak in the adventure of Thailand’s seas.

Hi Thomas, you participated in the SUP 11 Islands Tour in 2019. What stands out in your memory from that experience?

It was an incredible experience. We had an international group from all around the world, and what I remember most are the evenings spent together sharing SUP stories and life experiences. There was such an enthusiasm to hold more events like this in other parts of the world. Unfortunately, that excitement was halted by the pandemic.

This December, you’re returning to the event. How have you prepared differently compared to 2019?

Back in 2019, I felt well-prepared – or so I thought. I already had experience in the SUP 11 City Tour and other long-distance events. The distances in Thailand are shorter, but I had almost no experience on the open sea back then. Now, I know what to expect, and I’m used to even longer distances. My biggest question this year is still about choosing the right SUP.

What makes the SUP 11 Islands Tour in Thailand unique compared to other ultra-long-distance events?

It’s a mix of adventure vacation and ultra-long-distance paddling, where fun is the priority. We have lunch during the midday breaks, with time to snorkel and swim. There’s no timing – first to finish gets the first massage!

What was the biggest challenge you faced in 2019, and how will you approach it differently this year?

It was my first ultra-long-distance event on the open sea. I’d only paddled short distances on the ocean, mostly in sheltered bays. The 11 Islands means you face all kinds of conditions, including wind and waves, and are sometimes far from shore between islands. Now, I’m used to longer distances and know what to expect, which lets me approach the event more relaxed and enjoy it even more.

Each day requires paddling an average of 25 km over five days. How did you handle the logistics during the tour?

I didn’t plan much; it was a spontaneous decision as I was already traveling in Asia for work. I quickly bought hydration packs and UV protection in Thailand, and I could rent a SUP locally. Plenty of water and sun protection are essential since you’re paddling in the heat and sun every day. Maybe a snack, but lunch was always organized, and sometimes support boats provided extra supplies. The team’s organization really simplifies things.

What advice would you give to someone joining the SUP 11 Islands Tour for the first time?

Be aware you’ll be on the open sea, sometimes alone. If you’re not used to it, train in windy and wavy conditions. The more prepared you are, the more you can enjoy the event. If you arrive exhausted every night and fall asleep immediately, you’ll miss the unique social part of this adventure.

What strategies or techniques keep you motivated during long stretches? Are there any specific rituals or mental exercises that help you stay focused?

I have no problem paddling alone for hours. Navigation and reading the water keep me engaged, and if it gets too quiet, I start calculating remaining distance and time, which helps me stay focused.

For those inspired by Thomas’s journey, there’s still time to join the SUP 11 Islands Tour. This unforgettable adventure offers paddlers the chance to experience Thailand’s vibrant seascapes and connect with the global SUP community.
