Paddling Paradise: Karl Eugster’s SUP11 Islands Journey in Thailand

At 65 years young, Karl Eugster is living proof that the love for stand-up paddling transcends age. Originally from Switzerland, Karl discovered SUP 15 years ago and has since become a dedicated long-distance paddler, competing in iconic events like the SUP11-City Tour and Chattajack31. This year, he took on the SUP11 Islands in Thailand – an unforgettable event combining tropical beauty, camaraderie, and a touch of adventure.

Hi Karl, the SUP11 Islands is described as more of an adventure than a race. Did it feel that way for you, and how would you describe the overall experience?

Yes, SUP11 Islands truly felt more like an adventure than a race. I mean, in what other race would the support boat pull up to you and tell you to slow down, take a break, and join the other paddlers for a cool-down swim? Imagine floating five kilometers offshore in tropical conditions, enjoying a refreshing drink, and socializing – it was just so cool! The crew went above and beyond to ensure we all had an incredible time, both on and off the water.

Can you walk us through a typical day during the SUP11 Islands? What did the daily routine look like, both on and off the water?

Each race day began with a delicious breakfast buffet at 7:30, followed by the skippers’ meeting and weather updates at 8:30, with a focus on wind direction. The race itself started at 9:00 with either a beach or water start, depending on the location.

Around halfway through the race, we’d stop for a lunch break, sometimes on land and sometimes on the boat near a small island beach. For example, day one featured a land-based lunch, while days two, three, and four offered lunch breaks on a boat. Day five wrapped up with another land-based break, with time for some shopping.

At the end of each day, we were welcomed at the finish line with big smiles, cheers, and chilled coconuts. After cooling down, we’d relax on the tropical beach, head to our accommodations, and then gather for a dinner buffet at 6:00. Watching the sunset and hanging out on the beach was the perfect way to unwind before a good night’s rest.

What was your personal highlight of the week? Was there a specific moment that really stood out to you?

I especially loved the island hopping on days two, three, and four. Day two featured an incredible photo spot at Ko Kham, while day three included snorkeling on Ko Rang. But the highlight was day four, with an extended lunch break at Inner Laoya Island. Everyone was swimming, jumping off the boat, holding board meetings, and simply relaxing on the beach before we continued to the overnight location.

The event offers time to explore and connect with others. How did you enjoy the resting places and meeting paddlers from around the world?

We had plenty of time to explore, like paddling close to the shoreline and snapping selfies with monkeys. The resting places were fantastic, with accommodations conveniently located at the start and finish points. It was easy to connect and share experiences with fellow paddlers from all over the world.

Paddling so many kilometers over several days is both physically and mentally demanding. How did it feel to complete the distance, and how did you recover afterward?

Long-distance paddling is demanding and requires experience with nutrition and hydration. Having participated in events like the SUP11-City Tour, I was somewhat prepared, but completing the course still felt like an incredible accomplishment. Recovery involved daily massages, plenty of food and hydration, and a good night’s sleep – essential after such an intense effort.

What will you take away from this experience? Are there moments or feelings that will stay with you forever?

This edition of SUP11 Islands truly delivered on its promise of a tropical island adventure. The stunning scenery, the daily challenges, and the sense of accomplishment when ringing the bell at the finish line were unforgettable. The closing ceremony and dinner under the palm trees with paddlers from around the world was the perfect ending to an emotional and unforgettable experience. The SUP11 Islands crew made us all feel like family.

Would you encourage other paddlers – especially those who might not see themselves as racers – to join events like SUP11 Islands? Why?

Absolutely! This event is perfect for anyone with some experience in distance touring and choppy waters. There’s no need to push yourself too hard – the support boats are always nearby if needed. It’s a great way to combine adventure, community, and paddling in one incredible experience.
