Following the announcement of SUNOVA joining Race to the Jungle, taking place on 12-13 December as official board partner, we’re diving deeper into what makes this event one to attend. Created by Cassie Salter – Founder and Coach at SUP Fitness: Wellbeing & Adventureand the force behind the bestselling Race to the Castle series, series, Race to the Jungle brings a fresh twist to endurance paddling – combining long-distance racing, adventure and community in a unique tropical setting.
But what makes this tropical race-cation special from a local perspective? We’re getting a local perspective on Thailand’s SUP scene to explore what awaits paddlers, what makes the country such a compelling destination for SUP, and what participants can look forward to beyond the start line.
Ahead of the event, we caught up with Ohm, General Manager and Lead SUP Instructor at SUP Hire Thailand, Race to the Jungle’s local partner, to get the inside scoop on the destination, the local paddling scene and what makes this event one to watch.
Hi Ohm, welcome to TotalSUP! What makes Kanchanaburi and the River Kwai region such a special place for paddling?
Kanchanaburi and the River Kwai offer a truly unique paddling experience. What makes it so special is the perfect blend of stunning natural beauty – with lush green mountains and limestone cliffs – and rich history.
Paddling past the historic Bridge Over the River Kwai is something you can’t experience anywhere else in the world. Plus, the river offers a great variety of water conditions, from calm, flat water for technical racing to gentle currents that add an exciting element to the competition. It’s a paradise for paddleboarders.
What do you hope international paddlers experience or feel when they visit Thailand for Race to the Jungle?
I really want them to experience that authentic ‘Jungle Vibe’! I hope they feel both challenged by the river and amazed by the scenery. Thailand is famous for its friendly people, so I want every international paddler to feel welcomed and at home with our local paddling community.
I hope they leave the race feeling completely pumped, having experienced the best of Kanchanaburi’s nature, culture and, of course, our amazing Thai food!
What do you personally love most about this part of Thailand?
What I love most is how peaceful it is. Even though it’s rich in history and adventure, the misty mornings on the river and the quiet green mountains always make me feel grounded. It’s the perfect escape.
Why do you think Thailand is such a great destination for combining racing, travel and adventure?
Honestly, Thailand is the ultimate RACE + CATION spot! You come for the adrenaline of the race, but you stay for the amazing food, friendly vibes and endless adventures. In Kanchanaburi alone, you can finish a tough race on the water and then immediately go camping, explore waterfalls or check out historic sites. It’s impossible to get bored here!
If someone stays longer after the event, what places or experiences in Thailand would you recommend?
First, they shouldn’t leave Kanchanaburi right away. They should definitely go chasing waterfalls or simply relax at one of our beautiful riverside cafés.
After that, they must head south to Koh Tao – it’s my absolute favourite island for scuba diving and has the best island vibe. And if they love history and culture, they should visit Ayutthaya to see the stunning ancient temples. It’s the perfect way to round off an adventure trip!
What excites you most about Race to the Jungle?
For me, it’s definitely the ‘Jungle’ element of the race. I’m so excited to see the international pro paddlers out on the water. And because this is our first event together, it makes it even more special for me. It’s not just a race; it’s a real adventure, and I can’t wait to see it happen!
How would you describe the atmosphere and feeling of the event weekend?
I picture the weekend being full of energy and excitement during the day, with everyone cheering on the racers. But once the sun goes down, it will shift into a really friendly, relaxed community vibe. It’s going to feel like one big family of outdoor lovers sharing good food, stories and laughs together by the river.
What makes Race to the Jungle different from other SUP races?
Most races take place on the open ocean or on rivers running through cities. But here, you’re racing down a river surrounded by beautiful mountains and jungle scenery. It’s a pure nature adventure that you honestly can’t find anywhere else.
What part of the course or event experience are you most looking forward to sharing with paddlers?
I’m most looking forward to sharing the section where we paddle past the elephant camp. Seeing the elephants along the riverbank is such a unique experience, and I can’t wait to see the paddlers’ reactions when they spot them during the race.
What do you hope people remember most after the event?
I want them to remember the beauty of the natural surroundings, the amazing sight of elephants along the river and how welcomed they felt by our team. I hope it’s a race they talk about for years to come and want to return to every year.
How has it been working alongside Cassie and the Race to the Castle team?
It’s been an amazing experience working with the team, especially Cassie. She’s incredibly professional and well-organised.
Why do you think the partnership between SUP Hire Thailand and Race to the Castle works so well?
It works perfectly because we share the same passion for adventure and community. SUP Hire Thailand brings the local knowledge and equipment, while the Race to the Castle team brings the racers. Together, we create an experience that combines great paddling with the best of what Thailand has to offer.
What values do both teams share?
Both teams represent a lifestyle that combines adventure, wellbeing, community and a connection to nature, with safety always being a top priority.
What has been important for you when helping create this event together?
For me, the most important things are racer safety and protecting our beautiful natural environment. I want to make sure the event runs smoothly so everyone can fully enjoy the jungle adventure and go home with unforgettable memories.
About Hospitality & Community
Thai hospitality is famous around the world – what does hospitality mean to you personally?
To me, hospitality means making everyone feel at home. It’s about being warm and friendly, and treating the paddlers like family so they feel safe, happy and truly welcome in our hometown.
Why is it important that Race to the Jungle feels like more than “just a race”?
Because we want people to fully immerse themselves in our beautiful natural surroundings and go home with unforgettable memories. It shouldn’t just be about winning, but about sharing an amazing jungle adventure together.
What kind of experience do you want paddlers and guests to have away from the water?
Away from the water, I want them to completely relax in our beautiful natural surroundings, enjoy local food and try a traditional Thai massage. It’s all about unwinding and making great memories off the water.
What does community mean within the Thai paddling scene?
Within the Thai paddling scene, community means family. It’s a very warm and welcoming group where everyone supports each other, whether you’re a beginner or a pro. We love sharing our passion and helping one another on the water.
Why does the collaboration with SUNOVA feel like a good fit for the event?
Sunova is a perfect fit because they share our deep love for nature and outdoor adventure. Their high-quality, eco-friendly wooden boards are made for adventure, and having a world-class brand involved elevates the experience for all our paddlers.
How important is it for international paddlers to have access to boards in Thailand?
It’s essential. It takes away the stress of travelling with a board and paying hefty airline fees. Knowing they can get top-quality boards in Thailand means they can travel light and feel ready for the adventure.
What do you think SUNOVA brings to the Race to the Jungle experience?
They bring excitement, premium style and a strong eco-friendly vibe. SUNOVA elevates the entire experience, helping paddlers feel confident and excited to explore the jungle on the water with top-tier boards.
What does paddling mean to you personally?
Paddling is my passion and my lifestyle. It’s a way to escape the busy world, explore beautiful places and enjoy the peace of the river. It’s where I feel most alive.
What makes you proud to host international paddlers in Thailand?
It’s the pride of showing them the best of Thailand’s natural beauty and making them feel at home. I love giving them an unforgettable experience.
If you had to describe Race to the Jungle in three words, what would they be?
Nature, Adventure, Memories.
What would you say to someone thinking about joining Race to the Jungle for the first time?
Just go for it! Don’t worry about winning – just come to enjoy the adventure, connect with nature and make unforgettable memories.
