Isaac, you have a long history with sports since childhood, yet, it was only a few years ago that you tried stand up paddling for the first time. And that moment changed your life… Who are you today in the world of SUP?

I am from Mexico City – it was formerly known as the Great Tenochtitlan, headquarters of the Mexhica Empire. Judoka from an early age was the sport that taught me my character of personal improvement until I reached Sho Dan, black belt at the age of 25, a simple Judo lesson that would mark me for life would be falling and getting up, then it would be basic rule when I learned SUP, you fall and you get up. Then came swimming, the sport that cultivated my skills and taste for water, forging me as a Coach taking young people to National podiums. But it was not until the age of 29 that I did Stand Up Paddleboard for the first time on December 31, 2017 on a backpacking trip while visiting the magical lagoon of Bacalar, I saw a group of tourists doing the activity at dawn, and it was without knowing that this new activity would change my life and lifestyle from now on.

It was in September 2018 that I started working as an instructor giving sunrise and sunset tours in the Bacalar Lagoon, without having a sporting and only touristic vision, that is why in March 2019 I started with a dream called MAYA SUP, having As a priority, raise awareness about the care of the lagoon and represent Bacalar in national events, and now internationally. To be a hotbed of Stand Up Paddleboard-SUP paddlers, placing emphasis on children. Recognized as the National Champion in Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) by both the Canoe and Surf Mexican Federation, I have played a pivotal role in promoting the sport at various levels, showcasing its prowess on both national and international platforms.

Your first SUP experience was on the magical lagoon of Bacalar – the same place where you organize now the Kukulkan Open. Why is this place so special?

Nestled amidst the enchanting beauty of the Bacalar Lagoon, often referred to as the “lagoon of 7 colors,” this mystical haven captivates with its azure hues, punctuated by cenotes, mangroves, and stromatolites. The Mayan name, Bak Halal, meaning “surrounded by reeds,” perfectly captures the essence of this mesmerizing destination. My heart was truly stolen when I first encountered this place, and engaging in stand-up paddleboarding here has become an unforgettable experience.

What’s the story of Chichén Itza?

ChichĂ©n Itzá stands as a monumental testament to the ingenuity and spirit of the ancient Maya civilization. Recognized as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, this archaeological marvel captivates historians, architects, and travelers alike. The site’s most iconic structure, El Castillo or the Temple of Kukulkan, is a stunning example of the Mayan’s astronomical precision and architectural prowess. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, a natural spectacle unfolds: the sun casts a series of shadows creating the illusion of a serpent, Kukulkan, slithering down the pyramid’s northern staircase. This mesmerizing phenomenon not only showcases the Mayans’ deep understanding of celestial mechanics but also breathes life into their mythology, making ChichĂ©n Itzá a living, pulsating link to a past steeped in mystery and grandeur.
