The date has been set for a long time: on September 27th, 28th, and 29th in Fouras, Charente-Maritime, the 18th edition of the Fort Boyard Challenge will take place. This now essential event once again promises to bring together athletes and challenge enthusiasts for a unique and friendly experience: gliding and paddling around the famous Fort Boyard. TotalSUP will be there as in previous years to bring you the event LIVE!
Registrations are open!
Registrations open this Friday, June 21st at 12 PM for the windsurfing, stand-up paddle, and outrigger canoe competitions! With more than 640 participants in 2023 and a beach that isn’t expandable, you’ll need to act fast to secure your spot and participate in this September’s event.
For the 150 windsurfing/windfoiling/wingfoiling competitors, the goal is to reach Fort Boyard and return to Fouras beach as quickly as possible. The record to beat is 39 minutes, set by Antoine Albeau in 2019.
The VA’A outrigger canoe race, which set a participation record in 2023 with 37 boats at the start, is always highly appreciated by paddlers. The race format remains unchanged, with a race on Saturday and another on Sunday, and the battle to cross the finish line first will be fierce!
In the stand-up paddle category, with a sea start from a specially chartered boat, thrills are guaranteed for these two downwind events. This will surely satisfy the 150 glide enthusiasts who start each year.
Local businesses will also have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to paddle in the same direction during the inter-company challenge on Saturday at midday. The teams will compete in 300m sprint races along the beach. Fun and good spirits are on the agenda!
An exceptional sponsor: Iloha Eychenne
Since the beginning of the Fort Boyard Challenge adventure, Antoine Albeau, the most decorated French athlete, has been the faithful sponsor of the event. To highlight the participation of women in paddle and glide sports, the organization has turned to Iloha Eychenne, world champion in 2023, to take on the role of sponsor.
The athlete, who holds numerous titles in paddling sports, splits her life between Paris, the Médoc, and French Polynesia where she was born. For her, “It is an honor to be the sponsor of the Fort Boyard Challenge. This event is particularly important because it was the first major race weekend I participated in on the mainland with the Médoc va’a club. And then, the playground is mythical… paddling around Fort Boyard, which I saw on TV when I was a child in Tahiti, it was unimaginable for me to navigate there one day in a va’a!” Very committed to promoting women’s sports, she works alongside the event organization to encourage and develop the practice of paddling sports.
A third day for the Inclusiv’ Challenge
Among the novelties this year is the Friday, September 27th Inclusiv’ Challenge day, which is now officially part of the event. After the success of the first edition in 2023, this initiative specifically designed for local businesses and job seekers, who will embark together on V4 outrigger canoes, is fully integrated into the event. It’s a perfect opportunity to strengthen ties between businesses and job seekers in a warm and dynamic atmosphere.
