At TotalSUP we wanted to know more details on the development, design, and the reasons for inspiration for this range. We sat down with George Shillito to discuss the new Future Series in depth.
Hello George! Welcome to TotalSUP! What inspired the design and development of the Future Series paddle board range for 2025?
Confusion. It sounds strange but when we started developing the new range well over 2 years ago we started going through the range considering how we could make it less confusing for customers to find the perfect board for them without losing any versatility/functionality. Since 2020 our design ethos has been about creating a progression pathway that allows paddlers to genuinely upgrade as they improve without having to get used to a completely new on-water experience. I hate getting new kit and having to relearn everything over. This range has been designed to enhance each and every paddle stroke whilst retaining a familiar feeling to give you the confidence, stability and speed to take on new adventures. It’s why all our 12’6 boards are 4.7″ thick – to ensure when stepping up from an all-round board, you remain connected and can respond automatically to the conditions.
Remarkable how confusion can light a spark! Can you describe the key features of the Future Series?
To combat this confusion I talk about we’ve reduced the range from 27 boards to 10 models and colour coded them making the capsule easier to distinguish and reducing material waste at the same time. This reduction in models makes a big difference when it comes to finding the right board for you but at the same time we have also made sure that each is loaded full of features that make a big difference to you paddling experience and is what we as paddlers care about. Extra-long, circular carry handles, cushioned and embossed EVA for long distance comfort and grip, rubberized speed-tail release for less drag, flat bungee and small compartment stowage, universal US fin box for easy customization – the list goes on.
That is absolutely incredible! What materials have been used in the construction of the new paddle boards, and how do they enhance performance?
MSL800 is the key material upgrade that covers the Future Series with the exception of the 9’2 and 11’0 Compact which utilize our exclusive MSL1000 drop stitch. MSL800 was five years in the making and is 800gramms/1.7lbs lighter per square meter than our industry leading drop stitch MSL. This means the boards are up to 20% lighter but crucially this weight saving does come not at the expense of durability or stiffness like many lower grade products on the market. It means the boards are not only easier to transport but makes them faster with less fatigue over longer distance.
Remarkable! Congratulations on developing such lighter boards! How does the new range cater to different skill levels, from beginners to advanced paddlers?
The Future Series is designed to take you from zero to hero. Our Freeride boards offer all-round shapes that not only allow you to take you first steps on a SUP but eill quickly see you mastering standing and taking on new adventures. Made at 4.7″ thick the boards are designed to lower your centre of gravity giving you a more stable ride to give you the confidence to get to your feet.
Many ‘beginner’ boards are made 6″ thick and are super wide but this means as a paddler you find yourself on a high volume board that offers a very wobbly feeling – especially when combined with thick, rounded rails that are susceptible to any slight chop or wind. No, here at Red we believe that riding an inflatable board shouldn’t be a compromise and design all our board dimensions to give the very best paddling experience and chance of success – whether that be as a beginner or a seasoned paddler.
From the freeride boards we then move up in length to cross-over models where all-round versatility meets touring speeds and finally into the sleek grand tourers and speed machines – despite their length and narrower width each has been designed around giving paddlers total confidence to put the power down – even when the weather changes.
Are there any innovative technologies integrated into the Future Series that improve user experience?
Where to begin! We have a number of patented or innovative solutions designed to make a genuine difference on the water:
RRS Battens: This patented stiffening system is comprised of two battens inserted into the rails of the boards. The can increase stiffness by up to 40% which in real terms is aout 2-3PSI of extra stiffness allowing greater stiffness at lower pressures and on thinner boards. It’s what allows us to design 12’6 boards at 4.7″ unlike anyone else – it gives ridigity and allows for a more connected paddling experince.
Compact: This globally patented innovation allows the boards to fold lengthways and pack down to half the size. Our MSL1000 material was specifically designed to offer malleability and stiffness without forgoing durability.
V-HULL: Exclusive on the 14′ Voyager. This adds shape into the nose of the board allowing it to cut better through chop and aids tracking.
Spinbox: Exclusive on the Voyager. This new innovation allows you to switch seamlessly between a twin fin or single fin set up depending on your preference between agility and straight-line tracking.
Titan 2: Super fast and powerful inflation that offers two gears whilst pumping to put both volume and pressure into the board fast.
Fantastic technologies! Wow! Can you share any details about the testing process for the new paddle boards prior to their release?
Our design team live two years in the future. We are constantly asking what is next and where we can make improvements drawing on feedback and knowledge from a huge variety and network of paddlers – from long distance, ultra paddlers through to beginners having their first lesson. We receive over 10,000 enquiries every year from customers so are able to really get to know how and where the boards are being used – it’s always great to hear everyones stories and tales from their trips. Many of the shapes in the Future Series were designed for a specific purpose or with a group of paddlers in mind – so we were able to drop them into real world scenarios and listen to those paddlers to ensure they lived up to our own expectations – as paddlers we are our own harshest critics. From there we refine and develop the initial concepts drawing on previous models before adding the final, innovative touches.
How will you be addressing sustainability in the production of the Future Series?
Everything on a Red board and in our manufacturing process is carefully considered. As a certified B Corp organization it is our legal duty to constantly scrutinize everything we do across the company to ensure we are always taking steps to be more responsible. The Future Series is no different, reduced models means we have consciously consolidated material waste. As inflatable boards are not yet recyclable the main thing we can do in the design process is consider how we make our boards last as long as possible and work tirelessly with a team of chemists to develop SUP specific adhesives and process to ensure durability and longevity. Our board packaging is almost all fully recyclable with paper used wherever possible. Even small offcuts from moulded parts such as our pump hose valves are removed and re ground whilst our fins and patented RSS battens are 100% pure plastic allowing them to be easily recycled at the end of life. Sustainability and responsibility is in our DNA as we believe you should never compromise on durability, safety or performance – especially when taking to the water.
We are glad to hear that sustainability is in your DNA and you are taking all of the steps necessary to ensure that. What feedback have you received from early adopters or testers of the new paddle boards?
We sold out of a number of them after launch so that says something and to be honest is always amazing to see after so many years of development and so much hard work from the team to get here.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us today George! We are so stoked to see the launch of the Future Range!
