Summer time is SUP Downwind race time on Maui and last weekend was no exception, with the The Maui2Molokai SUP Race (M2M). Part of the regional race system for the SUP Paddle League, this race has been a traditional race for the past 7 years. With the Pai’lolo Channel connecting with the Kalohi Channel regarded as one of the best downwind race courses on the plane, attracting an international crowd of elite paddlers every year.
Again, this year on the 15th July the legendary M2M SUP Race started at the scenic Honolua Bay running across to Kaunakakai Harbor. This race challenged the athletes for 27 Miles on open ocean conditions!
This year Starboard sensation Connor Baxter took on the challenge and took 1st place in the Mens unlimited category in a time of 3 hr 19 minute, to be crowned the M2M king for the 9th year running!Connor told TotalSUP “From the first time I crossed this channel windsurfing at 8 1/2 years old, I fell in love with the big open ocean and how you can really just be present in the moment and your own thoughts! To be the only kid/adult to ever win this race since it start is a huge honor and I plan on keeping it as long as I am still paddling.”
In 2nd place came Aussie paddler James Casey 3 hr 22 minutes and Marcus Tardew in 3rd with a time of 3 hr 37 minutes.
In the mens 14′ category there was a strong french presence with Clemence Colmas coming in 1st place with a time of 3hr 48 minutes, 2nd place went to Joshua Riccio and 3rd place went to Alexandre Bicrel. Fellow Frenchman Vincent Verhoeven came in 5th place with a time of 4hrs and 16 minutes.
In the womens unlimited category Hawaiian paddler Devlin Blish came in 1st place with a time of 4 hrs and 6 minutes, followed by Aussie Terrene Black in 4 hr 13minutes and in 3rd place Jennifer Lee with 4 hrs 23 minutes.
The womens 14′ category Annie Reickhart came in 1st place with a time of 4 hrs 28 minutes.
And finally no crossing would be complete with a foil race, fresh off the plane for the London SUP Open was Kai Lenny who came in 1st place on the foil with a time of 2 hours and 17 minutes, Zane Schweiter in 2nd and Ryan Funk in 3rd.
