Bimini, Bahamas – Home of the Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis

Bimini, a stunning jewel nestled in the Bahamas, offers an unparalleled adventure for paddlers, captivating them with its unique geographical features such as the famous Bimini Road, and its beautiful island culture. Positioned at the crossroads of the Gulf Stream, this Bimini showcases deep oceanic shelves and crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life, making it a prime location for paddling year-round. The warm tropical climate, coupled with exceptional visibility and a welcoming community, enhances the experience for participants in events like the Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis. Our interview with Travis Suit, founder of the Pipers Angel’s Foundation delves into the distinctive elements that make Bimini not just a beautiful backdrop but a significant hub for paddling enthusiasts and advocates for cystic fibrosis research.

Hi Travis! Thank you for joining us today on TotalSUP! Can you tell us, what unique geographical features of Bimini make it a standout destination for paddling?

Bimini is one of the most breathtaking locations in the world for stand-up paddling. Positioned on the edge of the Gulf Stream, where the currents from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean converge, Bimini sits atop a dramatic deep oceanic shelf. This extraordinary geographical setting creates a dynamic and awe-inspiring paddling experience, with crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life beneath the surface.

How does the warm climate of Bimini contribute to an enjoyable paddling experience throughout the year?

Located just 45 miles east of Miami, Bimini is the most southwestern island in the Bahamas, benefiting from a consistently warm tropical climate. Its prime positioning ensures year-round warm air and water temperatures, making it an ideal destination for paddling, whether in the height of summer or the cooler winter months.

Can you explain the significance of the clear, turquoise waters of Bimini for paddlers, especially when navigating through marine life?

Bimini’s waters are world-renowned for their dazzling hues of blue and green, offering unmatched clarity under the Caribbean sun. The powerful Gulf Stream continuously refreshes the waters, maintaining exceptional visibility that allows paddlers to experience the breathtaking underwater world, from vibrant coral reefs to an abundance of marine life, including dolphins, rays, sharks, and sea turtles.

That sounds remarkable! What local culture or community aspects in Bimini enhance the experience for paddlers participating in events like the Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis?

The Bahamian people are the heart and soul of the Bimini experience, welcoming our Crossing community with open arms. Since the event’s inception in 2013, the local community and government have been incredibly supportive, providing sponsorships, logistics, and heartfelt encouragement. Whether it’s sharing a freshly prepared conch salad or dancing to the rhythms of Bahamian music by artists like Stevie S., the culture of Bimini adds a rich and unforgettable layer to the journey.

I must say, the music in Bimini was one of my favourite things I got to experience when I was there last year! Beyond the community and culture, how does Bimini’s natural beauty and serene environment impact the morale of participants in the Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis event?

Bimini is the perfect blend of adventure and tranquility, offering a rejuvenating atmosphere for participants before their big endurance challenge. For paddlers attempting the full distance, conserving energy in the peaceful surroundings is essential, while relay teams embrace the camaraderie and excitement of the island. The shared experience of gathering on this small yet significant island in the middle of the ocean creates a powerful bond among participants, reinforcing the deeper purpose of the event.

What safety measures and support systems are in place during the Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis event, particularly given Bimini’s unique location?

Safety is our top priority. Our safety and logistics team, led by Josh Ferris—an experienced marine patrol officer and past Crossing participant—ensures the highest standards of preparedness. Every paddler and escort boat is equipped with satellite trackers, and constant communication is maintained throughout the fleet. Designated safety boats, staffed with licensed nurses or EMTs, are strategically positioned to respond to any needs, operating under the oversight of our medical director, Dr. Ray Vazquez. Additionally, the U.S. Coast Guard is notified of our plans and remains on standby in case of an emergency.

That is really good to know! In what ways do the current and weather patterns in Bimini favor paddling compared to other potential locations?

The event is scheduled in June when prevailing southeast winds typically create optimal conditions for paddling. Some years, the ocean is glassy and calm, while in others, participants may face 3–5-foot seas, making each Crossing a unique test of endurance. Due to Bimini’s prime location as the most southwestern island in the Bahamas, paddlers benefit from the Gulf Stream’s natural northwestern flow, which acts like a conveyor belt, assisting their journey back to the Florida mainland.

Fantastic! Can you discuss any partnerships or local organizations that support the event in Bimini and contribute to its success?

Each year, the Crossing for CF is made possible through strong partnerships with organizations dedicated to environmental conservation and community support. One of our major partners, 4ocean, has played a significant role in the event, with Co-Founder Alex Schulze serving on the Piper’s Angels Foundation advisory board and participating in the Crossing himself. Additionally, we collaborate with Bahamian Waterkeepers and 4ocean to host a large-scale beach cleanup, removing thousands of pounds of plastic and debris from Bimini’s pristine shores. These partnerships amplify the event’s impact beyond fundraising, promoting sustainability and stewardship of the ocean.

How does participation in the Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis event in Bimini raise awareness and funds for cystic fibrosis research?

The funds raised through the Crossing directly support Piper’s Angels Foundation programs, which provide urgent financial assistance, scholarships, peer-to-peer support, holistic health initiatives, care packages, and basic medical aid to cystic fibrosis families. Beyond fundraising, the event serves as a powerful grassroots movement, amplifying the voices of those impacted by CF and advocating for improved care and quality of life. The journey itself is symbolic of the resilience and determination within the CF community, demonstrating what can be achieved through collective action and support.

Last but most certainly not least, what personal experiences or stories have you heard from participants that highlight why Bimini is such a special place for paddling and fundraising efforts?

Every year, we hear life-changing stories from participants whose journeys are deeply personal and transformative. One of the most profound aspects of the Crossing is the opportunity for paddlers to meet and connect with CF Warriors who travel to Bimini for the event. Hearing firsthand accounts of the challenges and triumphs of living with cystic fibrosis is both humbling and inspiring, reinforcing the purpose behind every mile paddled. These encounters leave a lasting impact, making the effort, training, and fundraising all the more meaningful.

Thank you for joining us again Travis and we hope that this is the biggest year yet for the Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis!
