Martin Andersen and Fofi Recio are not just partners in crime; they are the driving force behind the celebrated paddle surf school and team, Team Hercules. With the creation of their signature event, the Battle for Hercules, hosted at Club Náutico Marítimo de Benalmádena, their dedication to stand-up paddleboarding shines brightly. Both compete on national and international stages, embodying their passion for the sport.
While they share a common love for paddleboarding, their lives outside the waves are equally fascinating. Fofi contributes to the Benalmádena community as a National Police Officer, displaying a blend of dedication and duty in both his work and sports. Martin, on the other hand, dives into the competitive realm of property investments and real estate, applying his strategic insight to his professional life and the management of Team Hercules. Together, they represent the essence of adventure, commitment, and community involvement, leaving a lasting impact on the world of paddle surfing and beyond.
The intriguing name “Battle for Hercules” was inspired by the legendary story of Hercules and the strait that separates Morocco from Spain. It traces back to the first edition of the event in Ceuta, where the myth of Hercules—known for his incredible strength and bravery—served as our muse. This legendary figure is celebrated for creating the Strait of Gibraltar, uniting the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea and symbolizing the power of human will and unity. The event name echoes this historic feat, inviting participants to partake in a race that is as much about overcoming challenges as it is about connecting cultures and communities.
We’re excitedly anticipating the event, welcoming over 200 participants from various age groups and skill levels, hailing from across Spain and beyond. Attendees can look forward to a diverse array of races, designed to entertain both spectators and competitors. With a special focus on the Elite and SUB18 categories, participants will face a challenging circuit filled with sharp turns, portages, and long stretches. We’re also paying close attention to the Amateur and Junior categories, ensuring a spectacular experience for all involved. All age groups are welcome, from Elite Kahuna to U8, both males and females!
Live streaming the Battle for Hercules is crucial for showcasing this exhilarating sport to a global audience. Following last year’s success in Ceuta, we’re eager to broadcast from Benalmádena, a location perfectly suited for SUP. A high-quality stream allows people worldwide to discover the joy, health benefits, and fun of stand-up paddleboarding, making every moment accessible to fans and newcomers alike.
We’re hopeful for fantastic weather conditions during the event. Springtime in Malaga typically offers ideal conditions for paddleboarding, with moderate temperatures and comfortable water. Beyond the competition, Benalmádena presents a beautiful backdrop, with its scenic coastline, cultural landmarks, and surrounding mountains. Participants and their families will enjoy top-notch accommodations and the local gastronomy, making their stay in the Costa del Sol unforgettable.
The Battle for Hercules has already caught the attention of both national and international SUP racers, thanks to its captivating name and the success of last year’s edition. We’re thrilled to host renowned paddlers like Christian Andersen, Aaron Sanchez, Linus Carlson, Tarryn King and Duna Gordillo, among many others. The event promises to be a melting pot of talent, and we extend our gratitude to all participants, especially those in amateur, junior, and club categories, for their enthusiasm and commitment.
Our event wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, including NSP, O’Neill, and Surfcloud, to name a few. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the Club Nautico de Benalmadena, the Benalmadena City Council, and other key partners who contribute significantly to the success of the Battle for Hercules, to allow this race to be truly international and high level.
For athletes wanting to explore Benalmádena before or after the event, there’s an array of activities to enjoy. You can start with a visit to the serene Butterfly Park, dive into the underwater world at Sea Life Benalmádena, or find peace at the Benalmádena Buddhist Stupa. Thrill-seekers can partake in various water sports or take a golf lesson. For a bit of adventure, consider canyoning in “The Cathedral” Buitreras or watch a horse show at El Ranchito. Culinary enthusiasts might enjoy dining at Bonanza Square and experiencing the vibrant nightlife Benalmádena offers.
