Meet the Team!
A little about Mike… Stand Up Surf Shop owner Mike Galvin is just a local Cott guy who loves a beer, a coffee and time on the water.
You can usually find Mike either at Transits or stand up paddling with his daughter Lucy, right out the front at Cottesloe. He started the shop because he loves the sport (not to mention he wanted a more enjoyable job than digging soak wells). He’s a simple man with simple goals – he just wants you to feel the same stoke that he does.
Despite his humble nature, Mike’s had an influential role in developing and growing the sport of SUP in WA. He founded the biggest stand up paddle shop in Australia. He’s maintained very close connections with Starboard and now SMIK throughout his life. And he’s maintained his passion for SUP the whole way through. It’s very easy for Mike’s stoke to rub off. Mike is an ‘average’ guy (who surfs above averagely). He provides real life feedback, down to the smallest detail. So you know that any board he rides has been fully dialed in.
A little about Nicki… I discovered Stand Up Paddle Boarding in 2013 and immediately connected it with my background in dance, as paddling involves rhythm and balance! Back then, I was at the forefront of the relatively new emerging sport of SUP. I began training and entering races. My experience and expertise with teaching children has transferred to instructing and coaching paddle boarding for children and adults. I now specialise in one-on-one coaching, group fitness, school groups and birthday parties. I am an accredited instructor through Surfing WA and hold a Certificate III as an Education Assistant. I’ve taught students of all abilities throughout my career. Being part of the Stand Up Surf Shop team, introducing new people to Stand Up Paddling and sharing my passion is a pretty good gig. I’m also not going to lie – not having to wear shoes to work is totally awesome! Nothing puts me in my happy place better than spending time on the water sharing my love of SUP! Drop into to the shop and say Hi.
A little about Marcus… Marcus Tardrew is a quiet humble guy who loves the water. He was a professional sailor, nearly making the Olympic Team. This served him well through his many years of windsurfing, and he still draws on this experience in his current career as Foil Lord. After a brief stint on the Gold Coast, Marcus returned to the West in his role as Head Designer for race, foil and now SUP surf boards for Sunova. The conditions in the West are the perfect testing ground for Marcus to continue to refine his knowledge and turn it into leading designs. There’s not many people who know more about what works and what doesn’t. If Marcus is not in the shop, you’ll probably find him out foiling one of the local breaks. Or you might see him in a few competitions. He was the first Australian to foil across the Channel of Bones (Molokai to Oahu). When in the shop, Marcus is always available to talk board design. He can even create a custom design with your specific needs and wants in mind.
