SIC MAUI, has announced the release of its latest innovation, the KŪNALU. This new downwind SUP, Wingfoil and light wind foil board is touted as SIC MAUI’s most performance-driven foil board to date. Available in limited quantities, the KŪNALU 7’11 and Slash HAR 1100 FW are already on the market, with pre-orders open for the KŪNALU 7’6, 8’4, and Slash HAR Front Wing 900. Let’s take a look!
Performance and Design
The KŪNALU stands out with its superior stability and fluid maneuverability, offering an effortless porpoising experience before pop-up. This board is engineered for agility, mimicking the responsiveness of a shorter board, thanks to its sophisticated carbon-reveal aesthetic and cutting-edge design features.
Historically, the name KŪNALU dates back to 2005 when shaper Mark Raaphorst introduced his first hollow paddleboard under the same name. The word “Nalu” means wave, and “Ku” signifies rising up, fittingly symbolizing the board’s capability to rise above the water in modern SUP foiling.
Key Features of the SIC Maui KŪNALU
Flat Section Bottom: Provides initial stability off-foil and reduces drag while on-foil. Tail Wedge: Enhances natural rocking motion without tail drag prior to pop-up. Wide Point Forward Center: Ensures stability during paddling before take-off. Rail Apex High Up Towards Deck: Improves side-to-side stability and prevents rail catching during sharp turns. Forward Foil Track Placement: Offers the sensation of a shorter board, enhancing maneuverability. Volume Toward the Tail with Thinned-Out Nose: Ensures tail flotation and reduces the swing rate in the front.
SIC Maui KŪNALU: Construction and Technology
The KŪNALU features SIC MAUI’s new Super Fly Lite (SFL) technology, characterized by a custom carbon PVC construction with vertical carbon PVC foil tracks and blocks. This design ensures unmatched strength and durability. The board’s carbon-reveal finish, contrasted with colorful thick rails, highlights its performance-oriented design.
Complementing the KŪNALU board are the new Slash HAR 1100 and 900 Front Wings, designed to enhance downwind SUP foil, wing, and light wind foiling. These wings feature high aspect ratios (9.75 for the 1100 and 9.61 for the 900), offering exceptional glide, high-speed capabilities, and improved pumping ability. The flat anhedral design enhances turning agility and reduces drag, facilitating smoother acceleration and maximum speed.
