Hi Michael, welcome back to TotalSUP! There are many self-taught paddlers looking to take that next step to progress. What’s your advice?
There is so much information out there and you can self-teach yourself to differing levels. The next step of course is finding yourself a coach and someone who works with you. This could be someone you know, a local coach in your area or someone online with plenty of experience. A coach can help streamline your progress as they can help steer you away from common mistakes and develop you in a way that’s only for you. Depending on what you want to achieve a coach can be instrumental in helping achieve your goals and giving you the support you need. With a coach you have someone with the knowledge to help condition you physically, work on your mental strength, find your stroke weaknesses and find something extra to take you to that next level. You need a coach who really understands you and works with you to help you achieve.
Who are your training programmes aimed at?
My training programs are aimed at all levels. I have been fortunate to coach people at the highest level achieving World and National Championships. I have also had the pleasure of coaching the everyday paddler who just wants to improve their 5km time, or lose weight and become more healthy or just want something to follow when on the water. I enjoy coaching all paddlers as ultimately the journey to any goal is the same, work out what your goal is, decide how much time you have to dedicate to it, build the program and trust it, then keep disciplined on your path. Ultimately any paddler is welcome at BOOTH Training, I currently coach athletes from 13 to 75 and I tailor my training towards each individual athlete. If anyone is interested in my coaching be sure to contact me and we can have a chat about it!

The SUP calendar has never been more dynamic – but every so often, an event comes along that places stand-up paddling firmly and unapologetically at the heart of the experience. That’s exactly the vision behind the inaugural Gorge Ultra Distance, a 17-mile endurance challenge held on 12 July and set against one of the world’s […]

In 2024, many looked beyond the headline that read “the race won” when John Batson – the Flying Fish Board Co. rider, waterman with a background in windsurfing and kayak coaching and an accomplished endurance racer with podiums at events such as Chattajack, the Carolina Cup, and the Goat Boater Race Series – missed the […]
Starboard has shown us over the years that new launches usually come with a clear shift in direction. This time, the hints were subtle but noticeable – a hybrid dugout outline appearing in early previews, a few prototype shots circulating, and one question quietly surfacing among paddlers: are we done with blue? The sneak peeks […]
