Wind and Victory Challenge: Recap of the Belgian Ultra Long Distance Stand Up Paddle Championships
In the picturesque setting of Steneke, Belgium, the first stage of the 2024 Belgian SUP Tour unfolded this weekend: the formidable Belgian Ultra Long Distance (ULD) Championships, spanning an epic distance of 42 kilometers, equivalent to the length of an aquatic marathon.
Despite blustery weather forecasts and a still nascent season, 25 intrepid competitors answered the call of the tumultuous waters. Facing the whims of the sun and wind, all bravely set off, determined to conquer each wave on their boards.
Among the men, it was Manuel Lauwers, a true local pillar of ULD SUP, who distinguished himself by crossing the finish line first, boasting an impressive average speed of 9.3 km/h throughout the course. Bart Jansegers and Dirk de Beuf also showcased their skills, securing second and third place on the men’s podium, respectively.
On the women’s side, reigning Belgian SUP Tour Champion Liene Karale, hailing from Latvia, once again demonstrated her mastery by clinching the top spot. She was closely followed by Annita Bruijns, a Dutch representative, while Annelies Vos brilliantly secured third place, becoming the first Belgian to grace the podium.
In the team category, a dozen daring duos shared the effort, taking turns over the 42 kilometers of endurance. Long Distance Belgian Champions Michel Keersmaekers and Nathalie Van Olmen dominated the competition with an impressive average speed of 9.1 km/h, securing a resounding victory.
When grassroots rider passion sparks a thriving SUP community, backed by watersport organisations with a shared vision for growth, good things can happen. As we approach the annual charity-driven, SUP4Life event (12km canal race) and the Belgian SUP racing season finale, held on 15 December in Ghent, TotalSUP sat down with Vincent Claeskens, Founder and […]
